The first time I became a dad I really had no idea what to expect. You see things on TV, or you see how your friends are as dads. There were some dads I saw that were being really hard on their kids. I see know that it’s always for the best.

Since I have been retired from the military, I have been more involved and spent more time with my kids than ever before. I have really gotten to know them more on an individual level. It has helped me better understand and help to fulfill the needs that they need. My wife and I have six kids and let me tell you, six different personalities with each one having their own unique needs. I have to tailor my dad skills to help them understand.

One of the most amazing things that I have gotten to experience was the birth of my younger three children. Each experience had their own emotions. Today as I get to be there for them every single day when they wake up is one of the best feelings as a dad. I have a set routine with them, and they love it. One of my favorite things they do is when I come back home even from a five-minute trip down the road, I am always greeted by my kids with so much love.

Every day since I have been home, each child wants to-do something specific with me. Before I would say later or not right now. I have changed that way of thinking ever since I heard the song “Till you can’t” by Cody Johnson. That song hit my dad heart and I take every moment I can with my kids when they ask even its for 30 minutes. I believe that any amount of time you can get with your kids you should take it. One day they are going to be on their own with their responsibilities and they will remember what you did with them and do the same with their kids.

You have to find your own path to being a dad. It all starts with who your child is and what they need to thrive.

Fortnite, Star Wars, Tanks, Unicorns, Spiderman, Ducks. This is how I can explain my kids in one word right now.

I am cherishing every moment I can with my children. It has been so amazing to see them grow and change. I am very proud of who they are and who they will become.

Somethings I like to tell my kids:

Be you, because you don’t have to change for anyone.

Life is a lesson and no matter what, you are going to learn something new every day regardless of how small it is.
