When you go on terminal leave from the military you wonder, what am I going to do with my day. You were so used to getting up very early for physical training and then being at your unit all day. Doing various activities and tasks that needed to be accomplished. Every unit is different in the tasks they have to get done. There are so many things that have to get done, some on a strict timeline and some that you plenty of time to get done.
It was a very different feeling for me being home all the time with my kids. My wife and I had to figure out a rhythm that worked for us both. We homeschool our kids, so we have to make time for that. One thing that was important to us was spending the quality time with the kids. I honestly felt so blessed being able to be home every day with my kids while they are all still young. Our oldest is thirteen and youngest is two. The older three boys always asked me if they could do something with me. The activity would always vary depending on the child. It was sketching, coloring, sitting together and writing something on our computers.
Anthony who is nine is very interested in construction. He got a woodworking project book. There are so many cool projects in this book, plus it will introduce to him working with many carpentry tools and getting hands on experience with them. Once I get the little woodshop here at the house straightened out, we are going to be building a lot of cool things.
I have focused on my family since I have been retired and taking care of the house. I am currently trying to get back into school so I can finish my degree. My wife has inspired me once again to do something that will help further my career. Currently I am pursuing a degree for web development but want to be a software engineer. Something I am looking into and will blog about in a future post.
One of my favorite things about being a full-time parent is going to Urban Air with my kids. I get run and play with them and it’s a great way to workout also. Those trampolines can burn a lot of calories and help you stay fit.
Some things to consider when you are not in the military:
- Habits: you may or may not have to change them but take a look at them and see if they are still needed in your daily life.
- Time: make the most out of every day.
- Family: spend the time and make the time for them, especially if you have children, one day they will no longer be at home so cherish that time.
- Fitness: look for a fitness plan that work for your new life. I do a 5-minute workout that I do three times a day, and I got my kids inadvertently involved in it. Thats time spent with the kids and keeping you in shape.
I sure there are more, but I am doing my own research, and I will share what. I find.
Hope you enjoyed reading.
Have a great day!
